Chapter Twenty-Six

Saffie

The girl stopped in front of us and looked me up and down with big hazel eyes. “Bentley was right. You do look like one of them.”

I narrowed my eyes and cocked my head to the side. I felt my magic tingle in my fingertips, and it flashed in my peripheral vision. All I felt in her soul was rage and sharp determination. “Who are you?”

Quoya smiled and shook her head. “Ziva.”

“You’re Ziva?” Savannah shook her head and blinked. “I thought Quoya said you were young—”

“When she was taken, yes.” Quoya shrugged like this was obvious.

“I was a young girl when I was sent to the Wild Night, but time does not work the same in there,” Ziva said with a smoky kind of voice, gesturing to the wildfire behind her. “But you know this already from Bentley, otherwise you would not be here with us now.”

Savannah cleared her throat. “What did you mean she looks like one of them?”

Ziva gave us a small smile, then walked up to me and held out her left hand. Gold chains and diamonds sparkled as she moved. “I am Ziva. For the last seven years, Bentley has been my best friend. And you are Saraphina Proctor.”

“You can call me Saffie.” I shook her hand and smiled. “It’s nice to meet you. Bentley was rather adamant about us finding you. I think he was worried.”

That rage in her soul lightened and I felt a shimmer of happiness for a fleeting second that was replaced by sadness. “I miss him. I am not quite sure how long it has been since he was here. I come in and out of the Wild Night. Time is a strange thing for me.”

“That sounds overwhelming, I hope we can keep you out of there now.” I smiled. “These are my friends Savannah and Lily.”

The reddish-brown dog sitting by her feet decided he’d waited long enough, apparently, because he barked and shoved his face into my hand. I giggled and ruffled his ears. He had big black teddy bear eyes and his fur was silky soft despite him being covered in flames a moment ago. The coloring of his fur was actually the same color as my Olli. It made my heart heavy to think about what he was doing.

“Hello, puppy. Who are you?”

“This is Squishy.”

Savannah chuckled. “Squishy?”

Ziva shrugged. “He’s Bentley’s. Bentley and I were kids when he found newborn Squishy. He’d said, he’s so squishy I could die, and the name stuck.”

I thought about Olli and how much I’d missed him. I knew Bentley had to be torn up over his Squishy. I crouched down and gave him a hug because I sensed he wanted one. Then I pulled back and smiled. “Well, Squishy, we’re gonna have to get you home to Bentley, then.”

He barked and licked my face.

When I stood, Ziva was smiling. “You’ve been busy already, Saffie. Freed the slaves and eliminated a lot of Knights. I think we’ll be good friends. Where’s your other
